It originated as American craft brewers' response to the imperial/double trend, taking the classic Pilsner style and scaling up all elements while typically using premium European pilsner malts and noble hops or modern hop varieties. The style balances increased sweetness from higher malt content with substantial bitterness and aromatic hop presence.
