La Mancha
La Mancha is the largest continuous vine-growing area in the world, located in central Spain on a vast plateau south of Madrid, encompassing parts of Ciudad Real, Toledo, Albacete, and Cuenca provinces. The region experiences an extreme continental climate with scorching summers, cold winters, and minimal rainfall, which combined with its flat, arid landscape, creates challenging yet distinctive growing conditions. Traditionally known for bulk wine production, La Mancha has undergone significant quality improvements in recent decades, focusing on indigenous varieties like Airén (the most widely planted white grape) and Tempranillo (locally called Cencibel), alongside international varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay.
