Dão

The Dão wine region is situated in the north-central part of Portugal, nestled in the Beiras area south of the Douro Valley, where granite mountains protect the vineyards from coastal and continental weather extremes, resulting in a moderate microclimate. This region is known for producing elegant red wines primarily from indigenous Portuguese varieties including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Jaen (Mencía), and Alfrocheiro, with white wines crafted from Encruzado, Malvasia Fina, and Bical. Dão wines typically exhibit excellent structure, good acidity, and aging potential, with the reds showing complex fruit characteristics balanced with earthy notes and the premium whites developing notable minerality and complexity.
